lyrics

Envoi:
"And it was that I held the pen, 'twas I that held the paper,
But he dictated me the tale, and word by word I wrote it,
For he dictated me the tale of the fisherman John,
And ever tears streamed from his eyes, as he the deed remembered,
Till all his speech was broken off..."

-Entwhistle, W.J, European Balladry. Oxford, 1930

V.1
I came upon a man who was carrying a book
And he asked me would I like a story?
Go ahead I said, I got nowhere to be
He shook my hand and began his allegory.

He opened a page near the end of the book
And gathered himself to read
And soon I noticed that his eyes were closed
And his voice cracked as he began to plea

Hear me now:
I stepped over a river rolling
It’s watery ropes twined my hair
I flew amazed over a snow-capped mountain
Cleansed my soul and all the darkness there

I netted a fish downstream
It jumped right in the skiff
A golden coin was in its mouth
It blinded me with what if

I took the coin threw back the fish
A deal had been made
I bought myself some appleseed
And then began to pray

C: Just my thoughts and Apple Blossom Dew

V. 2
I tilled the land
I roofed a house
I loved and married a wife
I planted trees on the green green grass
I planted and the earth gave life

I tilled the land
I roofed a house
I loved and married a wife
She bore me a child a beautiful babe
She bore her but she died

I raised a daughter
I raised a child
I raised her and she grew
I raised her up as high as I could
I raised her and she flew

An old man am I, an old man alone
An old man who can't see through
An old man am I, an old man alone

C: Just my thoughts and apple-blossom dew

Coda:
He put down the book and stood as if to go
It seemed his story had no end
And on the ground at his feet I found he had left ink and a pen
Beginning to sing, I picked up the pen and then I began to pray
The ink gleamed with stories yet untold and the new breaking of the day
